Brownfield Redevelopment

Brownfield Redevelopment involves reclaiming old industrial sites for mixed-use developments, often incorporating both high-density housing, public areas and commercial uses.

Nine Mile Run Greenway Project Conversations in the Rust Belt: Brownfields into Greenways. This website describes a project in Pittsburgh in which artists became involved in a research program focusing on the reclamation of post-industrial brownfield properties.

From their website:

"Like most "post industrial landscapes"...

...there is nothing there.

Even on these semi-natural hillsides with stands of Beech and other hardwood...

That is..............unless you look closely!"

CASE STUDIES: "Brownfield redevelopment is a form of sustainable development, offering opportunities to revitalize older neighbourhoods, lower municipal infrastructure costs, increase municipal property tax revenues and lessen urban sprawl. Despite the obstacles facing this type of development, successful redevelopment projects have been built across Canada. These case studies are successful examples of residential projects that have overcome the barriers to brownfield redevelopment." CMHC documents at http://www.cmhc.ca/en/inpr/su/sucopl/sucopl_004.cfm
